Butterfly Mixer

Mixing

Mixing liquids or soluble powders into liquids. No particles are reduced but distributed in the liquid. This can be done with a propeller, butterfly propeller and even a dispersing disc to help separate any powders.

Dispersing

For dispersing pigments or other powder dispersion or separating from each other and evenly distributed throughout the liquid as a colloidal suspension.

Wetting alone might not be enough to get a nice stable product. Each particle in the suspension must be stabilized by polymer chains. Therefor a dispersion needs to be carried out by a high-quality high-speed disperser where the agglomerates are subjected to the forces of shear. The particles are reduced to their ultimate size by crushing or grinding in a liquid slurry.

The optimum speed for dispersing dependents on the recipe. But as a rule of thumb, 20-23 m/s is the optimal speed. On our Dispermill Discovery, you can read this peripheral speed directly from the colour touchscreen.

Vacuum dissolving

Mixing or dispersing under vacuum helps prevent air entrapment in the viscous materials. This results in smoother substances, prevention of holes in the product and reaction on air in the product. This method is most commonly used in the production of glue, sealant, resin, plasters, fillers, gels and more.

Milling

The Dispersion may not be sufficient to achieve the desired particle size. In that case, the next step will be milling or grinding performed by the Dispermill Immersion mill.

By circulating the product through the immersed mill chamber, which is filled with zirconia beads. The exchangeable propeller at the bottom and where the milling executes. The bottom and side-screen will support high exit velocities and higher throughputs than any other mill.

Emulsifying

Liquid-liquid emulsification is a critical step in making Creams Cosmetics Gels and many other products. The preparation of an emulsion water/oil using the Dispermill Rotor-stator homogenization is based on the emulsion droplet size. Emulsion droplet size is determined by the shear forces generated in the turbulent zone within the gap between the spinning rotor and the stationary stator. The size of these droplets decreases with increasing homogenization intensity and duration.
